TCS Sydney Marathon Preview & How To Watch

Published 25 Aug 2025

NN Running Team legend Eliud Kipchoge is set to explore a new frontier when he takes to the start line for the 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon – which takes its place as the newest member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.

The two-time Olympic marathon champion and former world record holder has claimed a staggering 11 victories at Abbott World Marathon Majors having previously snared victories in Berlin (five times), London (four times) and Tokyo and Chicago on one previous occasion each.

A winner of 16 fully ratified marathons in his incomparable career, Kipchoge produced a solid display in his most recent marathon outing, placing sixth in the TCS London Marathon in 2:05:25 in April.

Kipchoge said: “This is not only my first time racing the TCS Sydney Marathon, but also my first time running in Oceania. Competing in Australia is a huge opportunity for me. Sydney looks like a stunning city with so many iconic sights. It’s going to be a new and special experience for me.”

Also lining up at the TCS Sydney Marathon is two-time Tokyo Marathon champion Birhanu Legese, the ninth-fastest performer of all time over the distance and one of only twelve men to have broken the 2:03 barrier, with a personal best of 2:02:48 set at the 2019 BMW Berlin Marathon.

Joining them on the start line will be Kipchoge’s long-time training partner Laban Korir, runner-up in Sydney in 2023, and Björn Koreman, who owns a personal best of 2:10:32 and will make his Abbott World Marathon Majors debut in Sydney.

NN Running Team athletes Enock Kinyamal and Abel Sikowo will both be on pacing duties.

Despite only making her marathon debut in 2022, Tiruye Mesfin has already carved out a reputation to suggest the NN Running Team athlete will be a significant factor in the women’s elite race.

The 22-year-old Ethiopian made an impressive marathon debut, clocking 2:18:47 for sixth in the 2022 Maraton Valencia Trinidad Alfonso Zurich Marathon. The following year she banked an eye-catching second in the Haspa Marathon Hamburg and chipped 12 seconds from her personal best on her return to the Valencia Marathon, posting 2:18:35 in 2024 to place third.

Earlier this year, she produced another noteworthy display to cross the line fourth in the NN Rotterdam Marathon.
