BMW Berlin Marathon Preview & How To Watch

Historically, the BMW Berlin Marathon has proved a huge source of success for the NN Running Team, with the team securing six previous race victories in the German capital (five men and one women) since its inception in 2017.

The great Eliud Kipchoge has claimed four previous Berlin victories in NN Running Team colours and leading the challengers for the 2025 race is Haymanot Alew, who boasts six podium finishes in his seven career marathons.

The 27-year-old Ethiopian best illustrated his ability at the 2024 Berlin Marathon when finishing third in a rapid personal best of 2:03:31.

Claiming top three placings at previous Dubai (third in 2023) and Hamburg Marathons (second in 2024) offers further evidence of his ability to deliver over the 42.2km distance and he will be seeking a prominent showing once more.

Joining him on the NN Running Team will be rising Kenyan talent Daniel Mateiko, who is in the early stages of his marathon development.

The 27-year-old has proved an outstanding half-marathon exponent, boasting a blistering PB of 58:17, and he also competed for his country over 10,000m at the Paris Olympic Games.

However, as he proved when setting a marathon PB of 2:04:24 to finish third in Valencia last December he can also compete at the highest level over the longer distance.

Three-time marathon winner Degitu Azimeraw leads the NN Running Team challenge in the elite women’s race.

The 26-year-old Ethiopian is a high pedigree athlete as evidenced by her past victories in Amsterdam (2019), Barcelona (2024) and Lanzhou in May.

Azimeraw has dipped below the 2:20 barrier on four occasions with the finest performance of her career coming when placing second in a PB of 2:17:58 at the London Marathon. Should she find her best form Azimeraw should not be discounted as a podium contender once again.
